Dermot O’Leary hosts the show, he meets with Sir Paul McCartney to talk about the making of the 1973 classic Wings album Band on the Run.  The creation of this landmark album was not plain sailing.  When Sir Paul flew out to Lagos, Nigeria to record the album two of his band members had just resigned.  More surprises were in store, arriving at the studio he found that it was only half finished and no part was ready for the band to perform.   McCartney was mugged soon after, losing all of his demo tapes and almost his life.

The creation of this album did not end in the chaos that it started in.  Paul McCartney alongside band members Denny Laine and his then wife Linda McCartney went on to record one of the most prominent albums of the decade.  Many of the singles became hit singles and the album itself was awarded a Grammy.

The program also hears from other key players in the creation of the album. It will include stories about the shooting of the iconic album cover which featured many stars of the day including boxer John Conteh and entertainer Kenny Lynch.

Ok, so lots of people think that Valentine’s day is seriously over commercialised these days and they are probably right.  But if you are in a relationship, you ignore it at your peril!  I was thinking about the origins of St Valentines day and as it turns out a watch is an appropriate gift.  Read on if you would like my explanation of why giving a watch as a gift is a great way to make you extra romantic on a day that is not short of big romantic gestures. 

Anyway to go back to the beginning…

The roots of the festival are pagan, dating back to ancient Greece and Rome.  In Rome the festival included a lottery in which boys would randomly select the names of unmarried girls.  They would then undertake to protect this girl for the duration of the festival, often these connections would end in marriage. 

Years later some Christians attempted to revive the tradtion using Saints names instead of girls, the boys would be expected to emulate the life of their choosen Saint for a year.  As you may imagine this did not catch on, which seems to proove that love and passion are much more popular than celibacy and martyrdom! 

St Valentine himself was reputedly arrested for furthering the cause of love and helping couples marry after the Emperor Claudius had banned all engagements and marriages.  Apparently he also fell in love with his jailer’s daughter and left her a love note signed ‘from your Valentine’ on the day of his execution the 14th of february. This is one explanation for the reason that 1 billion cards are sent on this day worldwide.   

A european version of the love lottery tradition entreated the participants to wear the name of their chosen partner on their sleeves, hence the phrase ‘to wear your heart on your sleeve’.  So now you can impress your partner with your knowledge of the history of Valentine’s day and you can buy them a romantic present that follows the same ancient tradition of wearing a love token on your arm.  Watches can be bought at a price to suit any budget and any style; there is a watch to suit everyone.
