The super complication pocket watch was made in 1932 for a New York banker, Henry Graves Jr.. He was competing with an acquaintance, an Ohio Automobile salesman James Ward Packard, to own a watch with the highest number of complications. A complication is a function on a watch beyond display of the time and date. The Patek Philippe watch that was commissioned took four years to create and had 24 complications, a feat that was not bested until over 50 years later when the same watch manufacturer created a 33 complication pocket watch in18 carat gold. The calibre 89, as it is known, went for $6 million; demonstrating the value of historical interest in collectable watches.

Ladies Watch – $25 Million Dollars

The most expensive watch to be sold new was an amazingly lavish ladies watch made by Chopard. The watch mechanism is not the reason that this watch was so expensive. This ladies watch is encrusted with 201 carats of diamonds. The glittering time piece was reportedly sold for $25 million at the beginning of the year 2000. This Chopard watch boasts a 15 carat pink diamond, a 12 carat blue diamond and an 11 carat white diamond all of the highest quality. A further 163 carats of white and yellow diamonds finish off the watch. This exceedingly expensive watch lacked in practicality as the dial is of a minimal size in comparison to the watch, but I suppose that if you have enough money for that watch you probably don’t need to worry about the time too much!

You may have recently seen an advert featuring a rather youthful John Cleese. It is a remake of an award winning advert that was first broadcast in 1978. When it was launched it took the TV world by storm wining loads of coveted awards including the prestigious Palme d’Or advertising award. The ‘Accu-ankle Accu-wrist’ advert drolly points out the correct location for wearing a watch. Accurist decided to re launch this ad at the end of last year to give a new generation the chance to enjoy this classic ad.

Accurist have strong ties with another British institution, the Royal Greenwich Observatory.
