Duran Duran are one of the UK’s most iconic pop bands, they have been part of the musical scenery in the UK for 3 decades. This special television show celebrates their contribution to music and provides an exclusive look into the lives of the band members.

Duran Duran: For One Night Only is set to be filmed in front of a live audience. They will be performing some of their most loved hits from across their 30 year career. Duran Duran have sold more the 80 million records worldwide, their latest album is also set for success. ‘All You Need Is Now”, produced by Grammy award winner Mark Ronson has won critical acclaim across the board.

This show is going to be hosted to Christine Bleakley. It will be a mix of new never seen archive footage, comprehensive interviews with each of the members of the band and performances. The programme aims to provide viewers with an intriguing look at the bands history from the early 1980’s when their images were on thousands of teenagers walls and their musical progression to an established band who have influenced a huge variety of artists along the way.

Duran Duran revolutionised the MTV music video culture. Their image conscious appearance and popular songs gave them the ability to push music videos to their limit. They stepped away from the classic ‘band performing on a stage’ videos and choose exotic locations, the newest visual techniques and risque and storyline based narratives. Their approach helped to push the popularity in other countries, particularly in the United States. As MTV rolled out it’s services Duran Duran’s popularity grew. They were also the first band to use videos at their gigs.

The Sekonda Rose Chrono, an elegant mens dress watch plated in Rose Gold is to sponsor an ITV1 special ‘Paul McCartney and Wings: Band on the Run”.   This one off TV show is being aired on ITV1 Sunday 31^st of October at 10.15pm.

Dermot O’Leary hosts the show, he meets with Sir Paul McCartney to talk about the making of the 1973 classic Wings album Band on the Run.  The creation of this landmark album was not plain sailing.  When Sir Paul flew out to Lagos, Nigeria to record the album two of his band members had just resigned.  More surprises were in store, arriving at the studio he found that it was only half finished and no part was ready for the band to perform.   McCartney was mugged soon after, losing all of his demo tapes and almost his life.

The creation of this album did not end in the chaos that it started in.  Paul McCartney alongside band members Denny Laine and his then wife Linda McCartney went on to record one of the most prominent albums of the decade.  Many of the singles became hit singles and the album itself was awarded a Grammy.

The program also hears from other key players in the creation of the album. It will include stories about the shooting of the iconic album cover which featured many stars of the day including boxer John Conteh and entertainer Kenny Lynch.

Kim Clijsters has just won the US Tennis Open for the third time. She went into the tournament as the reigning champion having trounced the opposition last year in an amazing comeback. After 27 months of not competing, whilst she became a mother, she entered the tournament on a wild card. She stormed her way to the final and became the only unranked wild card ever to have reached the final and the first to win it.

This year she was still on top form and took the tournament in style, including beating both Williams sisters – she is the only person to have ever beaten both the sisters in one tournament on two occasions and the first mother to have won a Grand Slam event since 1980.  Her determination to succeed is inspirational which is exactly why she was selected to represent Citizen watches.

Pocket watches have jumped back into the fashion consciousness. They pre-date wrist watches and are generally associated with formal attire. But now we are noticing a big increase in the numbers of pocket watches that are being searched for and bought. The pocket watch has had a long history starting in the 16^th century when horological technology advanced so much that it could be contained in small instruments.

At that point only the very wealthy could afford a pocket watch and they became a status symbol for successful people. The first watches were actually pendant watches, they were too bulky to fit comfortable inside a pocket. Pendant watches have also made a comeback in the last few months, although they are now much smaller, designed not out of necessity but to create style.

The pocket watch has had a makeover as well. The first were really quite inaccurate, normally gaining at least an hour a day. Pocket watches used to be without exception mechanical, this meant that every day they had to be wound up. Some pocket watches are still mechanical often with the complex internal machinery exposed so that you can see it working. These kind of mechanical pocket watches are known as either full hunter pocket watches or half hunter pocket watches, depending on how much of the mechanics are visible.  The look of these mechanical pocket watches is very traditional and ties in with the lean towards vintage fashion that is currently a staple of the fashion world.

Watch makers are now also making some contemporary quartz pocket watches. The design of these pocket watches tends to be less ornate and smoother, with the designers tending to go for modern snake chains rather than the traditional open link watch chains. Whereas a pocket watch used to be an expensive purchase they are now affordable and accessible to the fashion conscious youth.

All this goes to show that fashion often looks back whilst moving forward. Classic style is back in fashion and we think that pocket watches look suave and are perfect for the range of social events that the summer has to offer.

1969     Seiko Astron Watch – the world’s first quartz watchmakers. The quartz watch revolutionised the watch industry. The electromagnetic properties of quartz meant that it could be used with a battery to create a reliable time piece. Seiko’s utilisation of this technology still sets the tone for the majority of watch manufacture today.

1973     Seiko LCD Quartz Watch – the world’s first LCD quartz watch with a six-digit digital display. The Seiko digital watch also started a revolution in precision timing. It allowed milliseconds to be displayed on screen for the first time.

1975     Seiko Multi-function digital watch – The world’s first multi function digital watch. The Seiko multi function digital watch allowed elaborate timing capabilities to be widely available. This was great for sports professionals and enthusiasts.

1982     TV Seiko Watch – the world’s first watch that you could watch TV on. Although this Seiko watch was not very practical, compared to modern standards, it still changed people’s perception of what a watch could do.

1983     Recorder Seiko Watch – the world’s first watch that you could record sound on. This function is not very common in watches today but the technology is still impressive for this time.

1988     Seiko Kinetic watch – the world’s first automatic power generating quartz watch (only later known as kinetic watches) Seiko Kinetic watches laid the foundations for a whole raft of other automatic watch movements. This technology really was a breakthrough on a number of different levels, the convenience of a quartz watch without the need to replace the battery or for winding.

1990    Seiko Scubamaster Watch – the world’s first computerised diver’s watch. Divers could now have access to a much wider range of information when they were diving, allowing them to maximise their time underwater.

1991    Seiko Perpetual Calendar Millenium Plus – The world’s first perpetual calendar watch ready for the millenium. The millenium bug turned out to be mainly a false alarm. Owners of  Seiko watches had no reason to panic as Seiko had already overcome the difficulty.

1998     Seiko Thermic Watches – The world’s first watch powered by the body heat of the wearer. Although Seiko Themic watches are no longer in production they represent an innovative approach to the problem of renewable energy sources and new technology that can fit on the wrist.

1999     Seiko Spring Drive Watch – The first Spring Drive watch in the world. Seiko Spring Drive technology replaces a long tradition of mechanical watch making. The Spring Drive watches are designed to be more efficient, more accurate and more durable. This Seiko watch has been hailed as introducing a ‘revolution in time’, advancing technology that had remained in place for 500 years.

2005     Seiko 3 Band Radio Controlled Watch – Seiko watches introduced the first 3 band radio controlled watch. This technology allowed for more effective radio controlled timing.

2008     Seiko Spring Drive Spacewalk Watch – Seiko make the first watch ever specifically designed for a space walk. Seiko were commissioned by Richard Garriot to create a watch that could be worn during a Spacewalk; an unprecedented challenge for any watchmaker due to the intense heat, pressure and radiation in outer space. They successfully completed the watch which worked absolutely perfectly the same type of watch was subsequently used by a professional astronaut on a 5 hour and 38 minute space walk. One hundred Spring Drive Spacewalk commemorative watches have been made by Seiko. They are available across the world if you have $28,000 to spare!

This long list of Seiko firsts is an indication of why they are pioneers of the watch industry, where they are likely to remain for the foreseeable future.
